Rice hulls are literally the husks of rice that are separated from the grain. They are used in the brewing process to increase the lautering ability of the mash by spacing grains out further, increasing flow of wort through the mash. By this, they have been known to increase efficiency and reduce the chance of a stuck mash. Rice hulls can be used in any mash, but are especially useful in mashes with a high percentage of sticky adjuncts, such as wheat or rye. Used at a rate of 2 to 5 percent of total grain weight (or more when using a high amount of adjuncts), rice hulls can help your brew day go much more smoothly!
